Issues relating to an organizational design
Nature of Hierarchy
The basic shape of the organization
Organizations with many layers - Tall Organizations. (Low span of control)
Span of Control - No. of employees reporting to the manager above them.
Organizations with less layers - Flat Organizations. (High span of control)
Determines the No. of layers between the CEO and the lower level employees.
Degree of Centralization
How the power is destributed in the organization
Centralized organizations - Hold power in the central level. All the decisions are taken from the Top Level Managers.
Decentralized organizations - The power and authority is delegated to the lower level managers.
Level of Formalization
Organization with high level of formalization has high level of rules, regulations and procedres, and high standards of performance.
Level of Complexity
When the No. of sub units in an organization increase the level of complexity also high.
Complexity increases when there are high No. of products or when focusing on different markets.
Different Organizational Forms
Simple Form/ Entrepreneur Form
mainly adapted by small or medium sized organizations.
Functional Form
Divided into different management activities or operations and these functions are delegated to people who are speacialized in them.
Divisional Structure
either based on product category, geographical area or customer markets
Each has its own functional division
Conglomerate Structure
Organizations with combination of business in different industries
New Organizational Forms
Team Organization
People from different functions are requested to work together to perform a project
Network Organization
Are focused on reducing their staff and outsourcing
Virtual Organization
Organizationa that are entirly based on the internet without any physical existance.
Hybrid Structure
A combination of all the above mentioned structures are used.
