Structure
- Formula C6H6 - Planar cyclic structure - six carbon atoms joined in flat ring, each carbon atom forms single covalent bonds to the carbons on either side of it and one hydrogen atom - final unpaired electron on each carbon atom is located on p orbital that sticks out above/below plane of ring
- p - orbitals on each carbon atom combine to form ring of delocalised electrons - electrons in ring delocalised as don't belong to specific carbon
- All bonds in ring are same so are same length - 140pm - lies between length of single C - C bond (147pm) and a double C = C bond (135pm)
