1. Single Transferable Vote

   • List candidates in multi member constituency
     • In order of preference
       • Lowest placed candidate is eliminated and votes redistributed
     • must achieve a quota
       • Droop formula
   • Used in Scottish local elections and North Ireland EU elections
   • Chose contenders from more than one party
   • Fairer to smaller parties
   • Complex

2. seats should reflect the vote

   • representatives serve very large areas
     • multi-memeber constituencies

3. Closed list system

   • choose party list
     • closed lists deny voter choice of candidates
   • number of votes for party determines how many candidates elected from list
     • seats divided according to share of vote gained
       • make coalitions likely
     • Used in UK European elections
     • strong connection between votes + seats

4. Additional member system ( HYBRID)

   • features of FPTP
     • 50% seats elected under FPTP
       • then distributed proportionally
   • two votes
     • 0ne for party, one for individual in constituency
   • scottish, welsh and london assembly elections
