   • one reason was that the wife was not performing her duties
   • women are finically dependent on men
   • still cultural support that men have a right to discipline their wives

   • the result of stress on family members
   • low income or overcrowded houses are more likely to experience stress

3. Radical Psychiatry

   • LEACH: because the nuclear family is isolated from the extended family there is more pressure
   • LAING: confused about roles within the family
   • COOPER: being shaped to fit the family & wider society
