Unit 1.5 V2 Network Topologies
Network Types
- Mesh Network
- Some or all workstations are connected to each other
- Most are usually connected to the node they exchange the most data with
- Star Network
- Each device is connected by an individual cable directly to the server
- These tend to be more reliable and so are used in schools and offices
- Mesh Network
Encryption
- A method of scrambling data with a key code which makes no sense
- In order to read it you must have the key
- We use it with wifi so if data is intercepted it has no meaning
- Request HTTPS, Certificate is sent, Client creates session key, Session Key sent to server, Session Key decrypted by Private Key, Session encrypted with Session Key.
Wifi
- Wireless Frequency
- Radio Waves transmit data packets without wires
- It has a cheap set up
- It can lose signal through obstructions
- Can connect multiple devices easily but more slowly
- Can be hacked more easily
- The user isn't tied to a specific location
Ethernet
- Stable Connection
- Less likely to be hacked
- Faster traffic speed
- Generally gives out a good quality signal
Protocols
- IP = Internet Protocol, Normally referred to in IP addresses
- HTTP = Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
- HTTPS = Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure, encrypted sites
- FTP = File Transfer Protocol
- TCP = Transmission Control Protocol, uses a set of rules to exchange messages with other internet points at the information packet level.
- IMAP = Used to retrieve emails
- SMTP = Used to send emails
- POP = Post Office Protocol
- POP3 = POP version 3, used to retrieve emails
Layers
- Layers are used so troubleshooting is easier as we can locate the issue
- If we need to edit the protocol, we can edit the one specific layer instead of the protocol as a whole.
- Any device from any platform can use the same communication.
