Sympathetic Neurones

  1. Sweating

    • A rise in temp. causes nervous system to send signals to sweat glands
    • The glands produce sweat which evaporates - cooling the body
      • Bonds are broken & the energy is removed from the body
    • Once body temp. decreases sweat stops being produced
  2. Vasodilation

    • If the temp. rises the blood vessels dilate
    • This means that more heat is lost from the skins surface
    • The shunt contracts pushing more blood through the blood vessel
  3. Vasoconstriction

    • If the temperature falls the blood vessel constricts
    • This takes the blood away from the surface of the skin
    • This means that less heat is lost from the skins surface
  4. Shivering

    • This is the muscles contracting
    • ATP is broken down to ADP
    • This gives out heat energy to warm the blood temperature back up
  5. General

    • They are motor neurones
    • They are the body's response to a temperature change
  6. Pilo - Erection

    • Body Temp. falls causing muscles to contract
    • This causes hair to stand up
    • This causes a trapping of air which acts as insulation
