Secondary Storage

  1. Solid State (flash) Storage

    • An advantage of solid state is that it is more durable than optical because it wont scratch as easily and has a faster read write speed.
    • A disadvantage is that it is less cost effective then magnetic because it has a smaller capacity.
    • An example of solid state is a flash drive. This is easy to get one thing (eg. a file) to another desktop quickly.
  2. Optical Storage

    • An example of Optical Storage is a CD. It is very portable to take from one place to another.
    • An advantage of optical is that it is very cost effective and portable.
    • A disadvantage is that the durability isn't very high and it has limited capacity.
  3. Secondary Storage is non-volatile storage. It is needed in your computer system to store your programs, operating system and files.

    • Non-volatile means that the data is not deleted and will always save even when it isn't turned on.
    • Volatile means that it wont save unless you safe it yourself.
  4. Magnetic Storage

    • An advantage is that it has higher capacity than optical and it is very cost effective
    • Not very durable and has a slower read write speed than solid state.
    • An example of magnetic storage is floppy disk and recording tape.
