Julia
CHARACTER
- 'astonished him was the coarseness of her language .. supposed not to swear'
- Julia has a boldness and a braveness he admires. Unconventional- woman who wants to rebel simply for the sake of it- feeling of being devious- thrill.
- Real sugar .. proper white bread .. tin of milk'
- Not usual for her to have Black market dealings- partner-strange- everything you wouldn't normally want in a partner- almost represents how her rebellion is much smaller than Winstons-she just wants food aznd do what she wants0 he wants a revolution- his makes more logical sense and shows a more developed idea- but hers is more achievable.
- 'astonished him was the coarseness of her language .. supposed not to swear'
PARTY
- 'spent an astonishing amount of time attending lectures and demonstrations'
- Great at putting on a facade- very dedicated- on the surface- perfect party member
- 'before the early sixties'
- Party takes her memories without her realising- defeated-- In this respect she remains at the same level of animals as the proles- practical but litle interest in ideas.
- 'Believed Party had invented aeroplanes'
- Representative of Oceania youth and how they infiltrate schools. The fact that they didn't strikes her as 'totally uninteresting'. She is much more carefree then Winston and only cares about her life. Believes party to be invincible.
- 'spent an astonishing amount of time attending lectures and demonstrations'
REBELLION
- 'tore off her clothes and flung them disdainfully aside'
- Conforms to Winston's dream- could be reduced to a wholly symbollic figure representing Winston's fantasy rather than a rounded individual he can develop a convincing relationship with
- Active verbs show her readily willing to rebel-clear defiant statement of individuality and life which the Party strictly forbids. 'flung' is a radical and drastic movement also one with purpose and desire to disassociate with something.
- 'Life as she saw it was quite simple'
- Wants to do things her way- looks for temporary pleasure - makes her vulnerable- more to lose.
- 'she hated the party .. no general criticism.. except where it touched upon her own life.''
- Rebellious for the sake of being rebellious- cares less about a revolution and almost just wants to live- grew up in 'the world of the revolution'- doesn't analyse everything wrong with the party like Winston does- he has knowledge of a different time.
- 'Brotherhood... refused to believe in it's existance'
- We cannot see her as a protagonist because she doesn't have the vision to cause a revolution- but she is more realistic then Winston, who is hopeful- jumpos to conclusions and thus misjudges fatally.
- 'not rebelling... simply evading, as rabbit dodges a dog'
- SIMILIE- aminalistic qualities suggests lack of intellect and pure instinct- pointless preadator- cannot win ultimatley- sees her to be vulnerable
- 'Whole civilisation seemed to be annihalated'
- Movements show rebellion- represents her dismissing societies values and outwardly disagreeing to conform. the ease with which she defies impresses Winston who finds it harder to replicate them as he must do so on an intellectual level
- 'tore off her clothes and flung them disdainfully aside'
