-insects use sound, light, color, and pheromones to communicate-

pheromone- a chemical released by an animal that affects behavior or development of other members of the same species through smell or taste

can help animals find their way back to a hive or a nest

can be used to attract mates

-sound communication-

attract mates

warn away others from territories

-light communication-

to find mates

species of fireflies have own pattern of flashes

-honey bee behavior-

social insects- insects that live in colonies

bees, wasps, ants, and termites

every member has a job to do

innate behavior- genetically determined behavior

behaviors that are neither taught or learned

types of individuals in a honeybee colony

worker bees- nonreproductive females that make up the majority of the hive

queen bee- the only reproductive female in the hive, only function is to reproduce

drones- males that develop from unfertilized eggs. deliver sperm to the queen. when the honey supply is low the worker bees kill the drones to clear the hive.

-worker bee-

feed the queen, drones, and larvae

nurse bees secrete

royal jelly- high protein substance to feed the queen and youngest larvae

after a week begin to produce wax to fix the hive and honey comb
