Sheila has been bought up in an environment where she is taught that girls need to be pretty and should care about there looks, because of this her initial reaction to Eva's death is to ask if she was pretty. This makes her more materialistic. This is seen when she is excited about her engagement ring and says "now I really feel engaged" like the ring is the only way you can feel like your engaged. She is bought up to know about the patriarchal society and that men dominate. When talking to Gerald, she says "is it the one you wanted me to have" referring to her engagement ring. Sheila is asking if the ring was Gerald choice because me are supposed to choose everything. She was also bought up to believe that men are superior to women and so should be treated as they are. She is bought up to believe in the social hierarchy and that if your upper class then your perfect but if you middle class or lower class then you should be looked down upon. This leads her to take her anger out on Eva Smith because she was working at a shopping place which ultimately got Eva fired. This she blames on her bad temper but because of the influence from the inspector she realises that she should take responsibility for her actions and becomes more mature.
