Code of Ethics: 3 Basic Principles

• Beneficence: Minimizing harm and maximizing benefits in research involving human subjects
• Justice: Distributing benefits and risks of research involving humans fairly
• Respect for persons: Treating humans as autonomous agents and protecting those with diminished autonomy

Institutional Review Board

• A group of representatives required by federal law to review ethical issues in any research that is federally funded, involves human subjects, or has any potential for harm to humans.
• Consists of at least 5 members from different backgrounds
