1Evaluations for Bowlby's monotropic theory.
P- The evidence for monotropy is [blank_start]mixed[blank_end].
E- Shaffer & Emerson found that most children made a primary attachment to begin with but many made multiple attachments at the [blank_start]same[blank_end] time.
E- This [blank_start]contradicts[blank_end] Bowlby's theory that a baby makes one primary attachment to one caregiver which is important and unique.
L- Research has shown that attachments to mothers are better at predicting later behaviours but this may because they are the primary attachment, not the different attachment [blank_start]quality[blank_end].
P- The theory of monotropy is [blank_start]social[blank_end] sensitive because of the implications for the mother's lifestyle.
E- The law of [blank_start]accumulated[blank_end] separation suggests that having a substantial amount of time apart from the mother could cause negative effects on attachments that will [blank_start]disadvantage[blank_end] the child in many ways.
E- Feminists argue that women are blamed for anything that goes wrong in a child's life and forces them to make life choices (stay at home instead of going to work when a child is born).
L- However, this is not what Bowlby intended, he wanted to boost the status and the [blank_start]importance[blank_end] of their role.
P- A limitation is that Bowlby may have [blank_start]overemphasised[blank_end] the role of attachment.
E- An alternative explanation is the role of the child's [blank_start]temperament[blank_end] (the child's genetically influenced personality) is important in the development of social [blank_start]behaviour[blank_end].
E- Temperament researchers suggest that some babies are more anxious and some more sociable than others as a result of their [blank_start]genetic[blank_end] make-up.
L- Temperamental differences rather than quality of attachment can explain later social behaviour.
P- There is support for the idea of an [blank_start]internal[blank_end] working model.
E- The idea of internal working models predict that patterns of attachment will be passed from one [blank_start]generation[blank_end] to the next.
E- Researchers studied mothers; those who had poor attachments with their own mothers were more likely to have 1 year olds who were [blank_start]poorly[blank_end] attached.
L- This supports Bowlby's idea of an internal working model of attachment as it is being passed through families.- Amixed

2Evaluations for Caregiver-infant interactions.
P- A limitation is that it is hard to know what is happening when [blank_start]observing[blank_end] infants.
E- Many studies into Caregiver-infant interactions have displayed the [blank_start]same[blank_end] patterns of behaviour. However, what is being observed is either hand movements of changes in [blank_start]expression[blank_end].
E- It is difficult to be sure, based on these observations, what is taking place from the infant's [blank_start]perspective[blank_end]. For example, is the infants imitation of adult signals [blank_start]conscious[blank_end] and deliberate?
L- This suggests that we cannot be sure that behaviours seen in mother-infant interactions have a special [blank_start]meaning[blank_end].
P- A strength of the research is that it uses well [blank_start]controlled[blank_end] procedures.
E- Mother-infant interactions are usually [blank_start]filmed[blank_end], often with multiple angles. Very subtle changes in behaviour/expression can be recorded and analysed later.
E- Also babies don't know they are being [blank_start]observed[blank_end], so their behaviour does not change in response to observation.
L- This suggests that the research has good internal [blank_start]validity[blank_end] as it is measuring what it intended to measure.
P- A limitation is that research into mother-infant interactions is socially [blank_start]sensitive[blank_end].
E- This is because it suggests that children may be disadvantaged by particular child [blank_start]rearing[blank_end] practices.
E- Specifically mothers who return to work shortly after the child is born restrict the opportunities for achieving [blank_start]interactional[blank_end] synchrony.
L: This suggests that mother's should not return to work so soon and some may [blank_start]not[blank_end] agree with this suggestion.- Aobserving
