- In Source A, the train seems developed and luxurious, whereas in Source B, the train seems undeveloped. This is shown by "the fastest train, the TS Luxury Express" in Source A, which suggests that the train is a well-known service designed for comfort. In contrast, "the little train engine" which "consisted of a boiler, a stove, a small platform, a bench" suggests the train is designed for an early stage of train travel, where comfortable facilities are not needed. Overall, this implies Source A's train is more modern, while Source B's is earlier and more basic.(level 3 = 5-6marks)
- Grade 9:
- Finally, the overall impression of development differs. Source A refers to “the fastest train, the TS Luxury Express”, which presents the train as modern and impressive. By contrast, Source B describes “the little train engine” made up of only “a boiler, a stove, a small platform, a bench”, which makes it seem small, early in development, and far less sophisticated.

- The writer describes the crash as violent and chaotic.
- This ishown by "my suitcase was cannonaded down ... with fearful force" (lines 12-14).
- The writer uses military imagery through violent verb choice, as if the suitcase is a weapon.
- The verb "cannonaded" suggests unstoppable force, making the inside of the train feel dangerous.
- This makes the reader feel alarmed because a normal object like a suitcase becomes extremely dangerous, so the situation feels out of control.
- The writer presents the crash as violent and chaotic. This is shown when the narrator says that his suitcase was “cannonaded down … with fearful force”. The verb “cannonaded” uses military imagery, suggesting the passengers are under attack rather than simply involved in an accident. This makes the inside of the train feel like a battlefield, where ordinary objects become dangerous weapons. The phrase “fearful force” emphasises the power of the impact and suggests the narrator has no control over what is happening. As a result, the reader feels alarmed and tense because the situation seems unpredictable and life-threatening.

- In Source A, the writer feels amused by the crash, whereas in Source B, the writer feels delighted by the journey. This is shown in Source A by "the right sort of theatrical manner". The writer uses a funny tone to show that they treats the accident like entertainment. The adjective "theatrical" suggests it is like a stage performance which is enjoyable to watch. This makes the reader feel surprised because he describes a serious crash in a light-hearted way. In contrast, in Source B, "lovely and wonderful beyond all words". Kemble uses hyperbole to show how strongly impressed she is. The phrase "beyond all words" implies she cannot describe how overwhelmed she feels/overwhelming it is. This makes the reader feel a sense of awe because she presents the journey as breathtaking. Overall, this shows A is more comical, while B is more wonderful.
