Question Answer
What is gestation? The time that the embryo/foetus is carried in the uterus
What is parturition? Birthing of the baby
What is labour? The sequence of events that occur during parturition
List some events that occur in the first stage of labour - Complete dilation of the cervix - Contractions become more frequent and stronger - Birth canal is formed
List some of the events that occur in the second stage of labour - Amniotic sac ruptures - Baby's head turns to mother's back - Crowning of the baby's head - Baby is expelled from the uterus
What occurs during the third stage of labour aka afterbirth? Contractions continue to allow the placenta and other remnants to be expelled from the mothers uterus
What is the route taken by blood in the foetus before birth? Foetal blood is carried to and from the placenta through 2 arteries
What is the function of the ductus arteriosus? Connects the main pulmonary artery to the proximal descending. It allows most of the blood from the right ventricle to bypass the foetus' lungs
What is the foramen ovale? An opening between the atria of the foetal heart. Allows blood to flow to flow directly from the right to left atrium
What is puerperium? The period of about 8 weeks were the mother's body returns to it's non-pregnant state. Abdomen decreases in size and discharge of fluid occurs from the shrinking of the uterus
Where are lobules found? In the breast
What are glandular alveoli? The milk-secreting regions of the breast
What is lactation? The initiation and maintenance of milk secretion as well as delivery of milk tot he infant
What is colostrum? The first milk secretion is called colostrum, it is yellowish-white and contains little or no fat and has a high number of the mother's antibodies
What hormone is involved in the creation of breast milk? Prolactin
What hormone is involved in the secretion of breast milk? Oxytocin
What is the milk let-down reflex? An automatic response triggered by suckling which releases breast milk from the breasts
Describe the events which take place during milk let-down 1. Nerve impulses sent to brain from sucking 2. Posterior part of pituitary gland releases oxytocin into bloodstream 3. Muscles around lobules in breast squeeze milk to the nipple
