Computer Memory Revision Flashcards

Casey Morris IT Year 10 English 6 cards

Cards in this deck (6)

  1. 1RAM - It stands for Random Access Memory. It is a volatile storage. It stores data as long as the computer is on. Extra RAM can improve computer performance.ROM -
It stands for Read Only Memory. It is a non volatile storage. Data stored in ROM can only be modified very slowly so therefore it is used for firmware or application software. It contains BIOS instructions.
  2. 2KEYWORDS - CPU : Central Processing Unit VOLATILE - Gets emptied when the computer is turned off. FIRMWARE - Permanent software programmed into ROM NON VOLATILE - Doesn't loose the data when the device is turned offBIOS - Basic input / output system contains programs to load the hardware
DISK THRASHING - When a computers virtual memory subsystem is in a constant state of paging.
  3. 3Virtual Memory - Virtual memory is simply an area of secondary storage that is used like RAM It is only a temporary storage. It is located on the hard disk.DRAM - Dynamic Random Access Memory
This requires constant power to store data.
SRAM - Static Random Access Memory
This doesn't require / need constant power to hold onto data
  4. 4VOLATILE - Only stores information to run programs while the PC is on. Reset when the PC IS turned off. Requires electricity to store data using transistors and capacitors.NON-VOLATILE:
Retains data even when the computer is off.
Examples in old computers : paper, punched tape and floppy disks.
  5. 5Memory is the area where the computer stores or remembers data. Memory provides the CPU with its instructions.AKA Primary Storage. Latency is the time for component to respond to a requestComputers require an input hardware, processing hardware and output hardware.
CPU - executes programs using the fetch-decode-execute cycle.
Storage- stores programs and files long term, even when not in use. Types include : USB, SB Cards, Hard Drives and SSDS.
Memory - Stores program operations and data while the program is being executed. TYPES : Register, cache, RAM, ROM and Virtual Memory.
Graphics - Using the GPU to render images, frees up the CPU for other tasks (most computers have a separate GPU and CPU)
Benchmarking - A test used to access the performance of a computer. Different types of software are used depending on the computers purpose.
Performance - CPU Speed (cycles per second) measured in Hertz
