    (mouse, tracker ball, joystick)
  10. 10Optical MouseMouse that uses a red LED light source to detect movement rather than a rubber ball
  11. 11Cordless MouseMouse that uses WiFi or Bluetooth to interface with computer without any wires
  12. 12TouchpadUsed on laptops as a type of pointing device
  13. 13Tracker ballA pointing device with a ball on the top which controls the onscreen cursor. The tracker ball doesn't physically move
  14. 14Remote ControlInput Device that allows the user to control other devices from a distance
  15. 15JoystickDevice that consists of a stick that is moved about to control a pointer on the screen and has buttons to make selections
  16. 16SimulatorMachine that simulates an environment for the purpose of training or for research
  17. 17Touch ScreenInput Device that allows the user to choose from options on the screen by pressing the option on the screen with a finger
  18. 18ScannerDevice that converts info on paper into an image which can be stored in a computer file
  19. 19Digital CameraCameras that don't use film to record photographs. Light is picked up by sensors and the resultant image stored on a solid slate memory in the camera
  20. 20DV Digital Video CameraStore compressed photo frames at a speed of 25MB per second - this is known as Motion jpeg
  21. 21MicrophoneInput Device to input sound
(into apps, voice-recognition software or VoIP)
  22. 22Analogue SensorA device/apparatus that measures info that is continuously changing
    (analogue data)
  23. 23ADC Analogue to Digital ConverterDevice to convert analogue signals to digital, which can then be understood and processed by a computer
  24. 24Graphics TabletA device used to produce freehand drawings (using a stylus) which are stored in a computer file
  25. 25WebcamDigital video camera connected directly to a computer, without memory
  26. 26Light PenAn input device used to draw on screen or select items on screen – currently, they only work with CRT monitors
  27. 27Magnetic StripeBrown coloured magnetic stripes, found most often on the back of credit/debit cards, which hold information such as the account number
  28. 28Contactless CardCredit or debit card with a small embedded chip that emits radio waves & allows customers to pay for items up to £25 without entering the PIN
  29. 29Chip and Pin ReaderA technology that is used with credit/debit/loyalty cards which contain a chip as well as a magnetic stripe. These are used at EFTPOS terminals, where the customer enters their PIN using a keypad and this is compared with the number stored on the chip
  30. 30RFID Radio Frequency Identification ReaderUse radio waves to read information stored on an RFID tag. The tag has a microchip to store the information and an antenna to receive/transmit data. They can be read from a distance of several metres
  31. 31MICR Magnetic Ink Character RecognitionA system which can read characters printed in magnetic ink (e.g. characters on the bottom of a cheque)
  32. 32Batch ProcessingSystem where all the data is first gathered together before it is processed all in one go without further need of human intervention. It is used in billing systems and cheque processing, for example
  33. 33OMR Optical Mark ReaderA system which can read marks written in pencil or pen on a paper – used to read answers on questionnaires, multiple choice exam papers, etc
  34. 34OCR Optical Character ReaderA system that takes scanned text and converts it into computer readable form so it can be used in a word processor and other applications software
  35. 35Barcode ReaderAn input device that can read/scan barcodes using laser light
  36. 36Handheld Scanner/WandUsed for reading barcodes if portability is required
  37. 37QR Quick Response CodeA matrix of filled in dark squares on a light background. Can hold up to 7000 digits. Scanned using a smart phone camera and app
  38. 38CRT Cathode Ray Tube MonitorAn older type of monitor that has an electron beam directed towards a screen coated in phosphors which glow when hit by the beam. Screens are refreshed 25 times a second
  39. 39TFT Thin Film Transistor MonitorFlat panel liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors. There is a separate tiny transistor for each pixel which means they use very little power
  40. 40PixelOne dot or square on the screen. It is the smallest item that can appear on a screen. The number of pixels displayed on the screen depends upon the screen resolution
  41. 41LCD Liquid Crystal DisplayFlat panel liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors. There is a separate tiny transistor for each pixel which means they use very little power
  42. 42LED Light Emitting DiodeUsed to backlight LCD monitors
  43. 43CCFL Cold Cathode Fluorescent LampUsed to back light LCD monitors before the use of LEDs
  44. 44OLED Organic Light Emitting DiodesUse organic materials, made up of carbon compounds, to create semi-conductors. They allow very thin, curved screens without backlighting
  45. 45CathodeUsed in organic films, with an anode. When an electric field is applied they give off light
  46. 46Multimedia ProjectorAn output device that receives signals from computers (and other electronic devices), magnifies the image and projects it onto a large screen
  47. 47Laser PrinterA type of printer that uses laser technology to produce high-volume, high-quality output on paper
  48. 48Inkjet PrinterA type of printer which uses inkjets to produce low-volume, high-quality printing
  49. 49Dot Matrix PrinterImpact printer, tend to be slow & noisy with low quality output
  50. 503D PrinterProduce solid objects by building up layers of materials
  51. 51CAD Computer Aided DesignAs the name intails
  52. 52Additive manufacturingUsed by 3D printers – the object is built up layer by layer
  53. 53Subtractive ManufacturingTraditional manufacturing method where material is removed to produce an object
  54. 54ActuatorA transducer which takes signals from a computer and converts them into some form of motion (e.g. motors, pumps, valves etc.)
