Question Answer
What is the water balance (budget)? Balance between inputs (precipitation) and outputs ( run-off, evapotranspiration, soil and groundwater storage)
When do rivers only occur? Stores are available to release water, direct precipitation or there is overland flow into the river
What is a river's regime? DIscharge levels rising and falling showing an annual pattern
What is the water balance formula? Precipitation (P) = discharge (Q) +evapotransipiration (E) ± changes in storage (S)
What is potential evaporation? AMount of water that could be evaporated or transpired from an area if there was a sufficient water available
What presents the relationship between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration over a year? Soil Moisture Graph
What does each section of the soil moisture graph show? Green- soil moisture recharge Blue - Soil moisture utilisation Pink -Soil moisture deflict Purple - Soil moisture surplus Blue line - Precipitation Dashed red line - Potential evapotranspiration
