JUNE 1948 WEST GERMANY USA, GB & France combine zones to form new country, West Germany
24 JUNE 1948 BERLIN BLOCKADE Stalin blocks all entry to West Berlin. Lasts 318 days.
MAY 1949 BLOCKADE ABANDONED

1950 KOREAN WAR
SEPT- OCT 1950 UN PUSHES BACK UN troops land in Korea (led by General McArthur) & push NKPA back
NOVEMBER 1950 CHINA PUSH BACK Chinese People's Volenteers push UN troops back through S.Korea
AFTER NOV. 1950 38TH PARALLEL UN land more troops & push China back to 38th parallel, where fighting stays until 1953
1953 EISENHOWER OFFERS PEACE If China don't accept, he threatens use of atomic bomb.
1955 WARSAW PACT Khrushchev set up Warsaw Pact as military alliance of communist countries, to rival NATO
1959 CASTRO TOOK POWER Fidel Castro siezed power from USA- backed Colonel Batista (dictator).
1 MAY 1960 U2 INCIDENT USA U2 spy plane shot down over Russia, USA claimed was weather plane. Gary Powers captured.
14 MAY 1960 PARIS SUMMIT MEETING Khrushchev demanded Eisenhower apologise for U2, refuses, summit meeting (possible nuclear test ban treaty) collapses.
JUNE 1961 VIENNA SUMMIT Khrushchev demands West leave Berlin within 6 months, refuse, closes border between East & West
AUGUST 1961 BERLIN WALL Berlin Wall put up
1961 BAY OF PIGS With Kennedy's knowledge, CIA train 1,300 Cuban refugees, try and overthrow Castro- DISASTER
1962 Russian Missiles found on Cuba
OCTOBER 1962 Letters between Khrushchev & Kennedy
