The carbon cycle

Suzy Tran English 7 cards

The carbon cycle

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1Removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere1. Photosynthesis
    2. Fossilization
    Removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
  2. 2Photosynthesis1. Green plants remove CO2 from the atmosphere as a result of photosynthesis
    2. Build CO2 into organic compound (sugar, starch, cellulose) by photosynthesis
    3. Plants eaten by animals -> digested materials are built into compounds -> make up the animals’ tissues
  3. 3Fossilization1. Any environment that prevents rapid decay may produce fossils
    2. Carbon in dead organisms -> trapped and compressed
    -> remain for millions of years -> may form fossil fuels
  4. 4Addition of CO2 to the atmosphere1. Respiration
    2. Decomposition
    3. Combustion
  5. 5Respiration1. Plants and animals obtain energy by oxidizing carbohydrates to carbon dioxide and water -> excreted -> return to the atmosphere
  6. 6Decomposition1. When an organism dies -> enzymes in the cells auto-digestion ( digest its own tissues )
    2. Scavengers eat much of the remains
    3. Decomposers-> micro-organisms ( fungi, bacteria )
    -> invade the remaining tissues -> secrete extracellular enzymes into the tissues -> reabsorb the liquid products of digestion
    4. When the organisms die ->
    auto-digestion -> releasing products ( nitrates, sulfates, phosphates )
  7. 7Combustion1. Hydrocarbon fuels -> come from ancient plant -> only partly decomposed
    2. When carbon-containing fuels are burned -> carbon is oxidized to CO2
