Flashcards

solubilty

fatima farhan Chemistry A level English 4 cards

Cards in this deck (4)

  1. 1bonding effectsto dissolve a substance:
    - bonds in it have to break
    - bonds in solvent have to break
    - new bonds need to form between solvent n substance
    - substance will dissolve if bonds formed are same/greater than bonds broken
  2. 2polar and non-polarpolar solvents - polar molecules like water (H bonds) and propanone (just LF and Dipole)
    non polar - hexane
    - like dissolves like (similar intermolecular forces n polars)
  3. 3polar solvents- ionic substances dissolve in polar solvents
    - ions attracted to oppo ends of polar molecules - ions pulled away from lattice = hydration
    - alcohol dis in polar bc has polar OH bond but carbon chain isn't attracted - more C bonds = less soluble it is
  4. 4non polar solventsnon polar substances (ethene) have LF - form similar bonds w non polar ones (hexane)
