Topic 5

Jack Henderson Exercise Science English 20 cards

Cards in this deck (20)

  1. 1What is Work?Scientifically is the exertion of force overcoming resistance or producing molecular change
  2. 2What are the 3 main types of biological work?➢ Chemical work
    ➢ Active transport
    ➢ Mechanical work
  3. 3What is chemical work?Synthesis and break down of larger molecules (energy into creating chemical bonds in making bigger structures from smaller structures)
  4. 4What is Active Transport?Moving ions and particles across cell membranes against the concentration gradient
  5. 5What is Mechanical work?Cellular functions that result in movement (i.e. muscle contraction) (also mitosis – cell division)
  6. 6What is resting metabolic rate? The rate of metabolic activity within the body at a state of rest (requires energy)
  7. 7What are the percentages of metabolism per organ?o Brain (18%)
    o Heart (33%)
    o Liver (15%)
    o Kidneys (33%)
    o Everything else (<1%)
  8. 8What is the law of conversion of energy?Energy changes forms and is not created or destroyed in its processes
  9. 9What is Internal work?Where energy stays in the body
  10. 10What is external (Mechanical) work?Where energy leaves the body
  11. 11What is Mechanical work?A force is said to do work when it acts on a body, and there is a displacement of the point of application in the direction of the force
  12. 12What is the units of Work?Joules (J)
  13. 13What is the equation for Work?Work (J) = Force (Netwons) x Distance (metres)
  14. 14What is the equation for Force?Force (N) = Mass (kg) x Acceleration (m/s2)
  15. 15What else is considered when calculating Force?Constant gravitational force of 9.81
  16. 16What is Power and what is its equation? The rate at which work is done
    Power (W) = Work (J)/Time (secs)
  17. 17What is an ergometer? An exercise apparatus that quantifies and standardises physical activity in terms of input and/or power output
    Examples:
➢ Treadmills (degree of inclination – determine vertical distance with SOHCAHTOA)
    ➢ Cycle ergometers (monarch)
    ➢ Box
Carefully apply force to calculate force & power
  18. 18How do you calculate power output for Cycling ergometer?Force (N) x Distance (Rotations per minute (rpm) x 6 metres (distance of full rotation) x Time (mins))
  19. 19How do you calculate power output without time for Cycling ergometer?Power = Force (N) x Distance (Metres)/Time (Seconds)
  20. 20Dependents on fuelling work?Depends on working rate (differs between individuals based on genetic and assertive behaviours)
