How many kingdoms were there? Originally, there were seven, before they were all united as one.
What were earldoms? Earldoms were areas of England run by the earls, who were given the land by the king.
When did Edward the Confessor become king? 1042.
What were the people who were given land by the king in return for loyalty and military assistance called? Thegns.
Who were the king's council? The Witan.
Most ordinary people were? Ceorls.
Thralls were considered what? Slaves.
Could ceorls become thegns? Yes.
What was the common religion, and when did the conversion start? Christianity, and the conversion started in AD597.
How many Gods did they believe in? One.
Was religion a minor or major part of people's lives? It was a major part of people's lives, to the point where the church held much power over them.
Who got an education? The king's sons or the sons of rich thegns. It was rare girls got an education.
What was the language of the time like? Old English, comprised from West Germanic languages.
Hundred courts were what? Officials given power by the king to listen to trials.
What was the most common trial by? Trial by ordeal.
What was a wergild? A wergild is the amount of compensation paid by a person committing an offence to the injured party. If the money is not paid, the family of the victim could pursue a blood feud.
