Flashcards

Digital data key words

Abbie Welch Computing GCSE English 16 cards

Cards in this deck (16)

  1. 1DataRaw facts and figures that have not been processed and therefore not given a meaning or context.
E.g. 432 is just a series of digits.
  2. 2informationIs data that has been processed and therefore given a meaning and a context
    E.g. 432 is a patients id number
  3. 3Bit Nibble Byte Kilobyte Megabyte Gigabyte Terabyte-A binary digit is either 1 or a 0 and is the smallest unit of storage
-4 bits or half a byte
    -8 bits
    -1024 Bytes
    -1024 Kilobytes
    -1024 Megabytes
    -1024 Terabytes
  4. 4What is ASCIIA character set used to represent letters, digits or punctuation marks in binary format.
  5. 5Bitmap graphiccan be formed as a number of pixels. The more pixels the better the resolution of the image is.
  6. 6Vector-based graphicsformed using mathematical objects such as lines and curves.
  7. 7Video streamingWhen videos can be viewed straight as opposed to downloading it before viewing
  8. 8BufferingIs an allocated part of the memory that is used to store a downloaded part of the video before it is watched
  9. 9Sample ratethis is the number of audio sound samples captured every second to represent the sounds digitally and is measured is hertz(Hz). The more samples that are taken per second the more accurate the digital representation of the original sound(results in higher quality sound)
  10. 10Bit depthBit depth is the number of bits used to store each sound sample. Higher quality sound requires a higher bit depth.
  11. 11Bit rateBit rate refers to the quantity of data measured in bits that is processed in a given amount of time. Usually in kilobits per second
  12. 12Analogue to digital conversionAn analogue signal is described as a continuous varying signal that represents a physical quantity such as sound.
Before a computer can process analogue signals they need to be converted to a digital format (binary).
  13. 13Data Portabilityis the ability to transfer data from one computer to another or from one software application to another without having to re-enter data
  14. 14JPEG TIFF PNG GIF TXT CSV RTF MIDI MPEG AVI PDF WAV WMAJoint photographic expert group
    Tagged image file format
    Portable network graphics
    Graphics interchange format
    Plain text
    Comma-separated value
    Rich text format
    Musical instrument Digital interface
    Moving picture experts group
    Audio video interleaved
    Portable document format
    Windows audio waveform
    Windows media audio
  15. 15Data compressionused to convert digital data to as small a size as possible while still maintaining the quality of the file
  16. 16Lossy compressionreduces the file size by removing some of the data e.g. reducing the number of colours used in an image.
