Flashcards
Blood

Cards in this deck (18)
- 1Functions of Blood1. Transport
2. Regulation
3. Protection - 2Components of BloodBlood plasma (55%) - watery extracellular matrix that contains dissolved substances
formed elements (45%) - cells and cell fragments
99% - RBC
1% - WBC and Platelets - 3Blood PlasmaStraw colored liquid left when formed elements are removed
91.5% water and 8.5% solutes
Plasma Proteins- 7%
albumins - 54%
globulins - 38%
fibrinogen - 7% - 4AlbuminsSmallest and Most numerous of plasma proteins
Responsible for:
colloidal osmotic pressure
blood viscosity
transport hormones, fatty acids and Ca
regulate blood pH - 5Fibrinogenlarge protein
plays role in blood clotting - 6Globulinslarge proteins
produce immunoglobulin
alpha and beta globulins transport Fe, lipids and fat soluble vitamins
Immunoglobulin attack viruses and bacteria - 7Functions of Plasma Protein1. Coagulation of blood
2. Defense Mechanism
3. Transport Mechanism
4. Maintain osmotic pressure
5. Regulation of acid-base balance
6. Viscosity of Blood
7. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate
8. suspension stability of RBC - 8WBChave full nuclei and organelles
no hemoglobin
2 types -
Granular -
Displays granules with distinctive coloration that can be seen under a light microscope
: Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Basophils
Agranular -
Posess granules but not visible under light microscope due to small size and poor staining quality
: Lymphocytes, Monocyte - 9Formed Elements & FunctionsRBC / erythrocytes - transport o2 and co2
WBC / leukocytes - protect body from pathogens and other foreign substances. neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, monocytes and lymphocytes. lymphocytes are further divided into B cells , T cells and NK.
Platelets - fragments of cells that do not have nucleus.
promote blood clotting. - 10Hemopoiesis Process

- 11Hemopoiesis

- 12Physical Characteristics of Blooddenser and more viscous than water
slightly sticky
temp: 38°C - 13Neutrophils60-70% of WBC
Have smaller granules
evenly distributed
pale lilac
do not attract acidic or basic stains (neutral)
nucleus - 2-5 lobes held together by thread of nuclear material.
no of lobes decrease when cells age.
Functions: Phagocytosis. destruction of bacteria with lysozome, defensins and strong oxidants (eg: H2O2) - 14Eosinophilslarge granules which do not cover nucleus
red-orange color with acidic dyes
nucleus has 2 lobes connected by strands of nuclear material
Functions : combat effects of histamine in allergic reactions
Phagocytize and destroy some parastitic worms - 15Basophilsround, different sized granules
blue-purple with basic dyes
granules cover nucleus
nucleus has two lobes
functions:
liberate heparin, histamin and serotonin in allergic reaction that intensify overall inflammatory response - 16Lymphocytes ( Agranular Leukocytes)nucleus stains dark, is round
cytoplasm stain silky blue and forms rim around nucleus
larger cell- more cytoplasm visible
2 types : large and small lymphocytes
Functions : mediate immune response (antigen-antibody reactions) - 17Monocyte (Agranular Leukocytes)nucleus- kidney / horseshoe shaped
cytoplasm- blue grey, foamy appearance - 18Properties of WBC1. Diapedesis
2. Chemotaxis
3.Phagocytosis
