Question Answer
Describe the features of plants. - They're all multicellular - The main feature is that their cells contain chloroplasts, which carries out photosynthesis
Describe the features of animals and name an example of a mammal and an insect. - They're all multicellular organisms - They feed on other animals or plants - An example of a mammal is a human - An example of an insect is a housefly - They store carbohydrate in their cells as glycogen - Vertebrates means a group of animals that have a vertebral column (backbone) - Invertebrates are the opposite
Describe the features of fungi and give two examples. - Includes groups such as mushrooms, toadstools and moulds which are multicellular - Also includes groups such as yeasts, which are unicellular - Two examples are Mucor and Yeast
Describe the features of protoctists and name three examples. - It's a mixed group of organisms that don't fit into other groups - Most are microscopic single-celled organisms - Some look like animal cells, others like plant cells - Most are unicellular, but some species i.e seaweed is multicellular - Three examples are Amoeba, Chlorella and Plasmodium
Describe the features of bacteria and name two examples. - Are single-celled organisms - Have different shapes i.e spheres, rods and spirals - Are surrounded by cell wall which protects the bacteria - The cell all is composed of complex chemicals made of polysaccharides and proteins - Some bacteria can swim if they have flagellum - Have quite a simple structure - Have very important uses in genetic engineering - Two examples are Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Pneumococcus
Describe the features of viruses and name an example. - Are parasites that can only reproduce inside living cells - Viruses are not made of cells - They only reproduce - Are on the border between a living organism and a non-living chemical - After the virus has reproduced as much as possible inside it's host, the host dies and the particles are released to infect more cells - The body's immune system destroys the virus - An example is tobacco mosaic virus, which causes influenza and the HIV virus
What is a pathogen? They're organisms which cause disease. It can be a fungi, bacteria, protoctist or a virus.
