Question Answer
What is force? a push or pull that can cause an object to move, stop moving, change speed, or change direction
What is a netwon? an SI unit of force represented by the letter N
What is gravity? a universal force that every mass exerts on every other mass
What is friction? a force that resists motion between two objects that are in contact
What is the net force? The sum of all forces acting on an object
When an object moves, stops moving, changes speed, or changes direction, how do scientists describe that condition? unbalanced forces
What is "mass"? the amount of matter in an object
What is the measure of the gravitational force between any two objects? Weight
What is weight measured in, in Science? newtons
What is the difference between mass and weight? An object’s mass on earth is the same as it would be anywhere else in the universe where as, measured by gravitational force, an object’s weight can change depending on where the object is in the universe
What is translational motion? a type of motion in an object that results in a change of position from point A to point B
What is rotational motion? when objects spin in place
What is vibrational motion? rapid back and forth movement of the kind found in particles that make up a substance
What is a reference point? a point from which the position of other objects can be described
What is displacement? the distance and the direction from a reference point of an object that has undergone motion
How to calculate displacement? d2 – d1 =Δd = displacement ex. a person starts at the house and walks east 1 km (d1), then turns and walks west 3 km (d2) 3 - 1 = 2=
What do scientists use to accurately describe the position of an object? coordinate systems
What is the formula to calculate speed? s=d/t speed= distance/time
What is velocity? speed in a specific direction
What is the formula for calculating velocity? velocity=displacement / change in time
Formula for time= Distance / Speed
Formula for Distance= Speed x Time
Formula for Speed= Distance / Time
What is acceleration? a change in velocity over time
Formula for acceleration a= change in velocity / change in time
What is deceleration? A way to say an object is slowing down
What is inertia? the quality of an object that resists a change in motion or resists a change in the resting state
What is friction? the force between two surfaces or the force of a surrounding environment
What is weight? the magnitude of gravitational force acting on an object
What is the mathematical formula to describe the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration that Newton developed? F = ma. F = unbalanced force (N) m = mass (kg) a = acceleration (m/s2)
What is the formula for 'mass'? mass= force / acceleration mass= momentum / velocity mass= Density X volume
What is the formula for acceleration? A = force / mass
Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that when one object exerts a force on a second object, the forces are __________________. equal in magnitude and opposite in direction
Define buoyancy the tendency of an object to float
What is Archimedes’ principle? it is a way to measure buoyant force
