Jews and Negativity from Scots although they did not recieve the same extebt of discimination of other immigrant groups, Jews were subject to a lot of negativity from Scots.
Anti-Jewish Campaign 1930 - British Union of Facists attempted to spread ant-jewish propoganda - however these attempts were not a success.
Experiences Jews Experienced harrassment, prejudice and discrimination. Jews in schools known as "tin cans" - proving anti-semitism existed in Scotland.
School Experiences Jews forced to decide whether they wanted to be friends with Protestants or Cathlolics - the group not chosen would pick on them.
Anti-Jewish Organisations pt 2. Press refused to be caught up in hysteria caused in London by the threat of these "Alien Immigrants" and some Trade unions opposed to all Immigrant groups. - as a result Jews did not assimilate fully into society
Trade Unions: Jewish TU's in Glasgow tailoring and cabinet making industries and many Jews took part in wider activities - e.g. Local Politics. Michael Simmons of Garnethill (Director of a major fruit business) was electred a civic officer in 1880s.
The Gorbals 90% of Jewish Immigrants lived in the Gorbals of Glasgow, setting up business such as warehousing, entertainments and also scottish cultural business like whiskey/distilleries.
Jewis Businesses Most were involved in shopkeeping, tailoring, sho making and the manufactoring and distributing of furniture. Hebrew Benevolent Society - founded in 1888.
Yiddish to English Jews initially spoke yiddish but when they moved they began to show assimilation as they started teaching English withing their schools, rather than Yiddish. However - the fact that Jewish Children were limited to Jewish Schools still showed limited assimilation.
Jews and Politics The Jews were heavily involved in politics and were active in the ILP and SLP - The Jewish voice was being heard by the Scots.
Jews and Labour Party The Jews wanted to promote socialist ideas to fight against the increasing anti-semitism parties like the Nazis and gave most of their support to Labour.
Jews and Local Politics It was widely believed that Michael Simon's prominent position within the Glasgow Council has assisted in the acceptance of the Jewish Community in Glasgow, having an impact on how they were perceived by Scots.
Jewish Society and Culture The Gorbals attracted Jews due to cheap housing, accommodation close to the railways and the shipping of the clyde - a Community was quickly established in 1887 and became a close network based on religion, culturem charity, socialising and education.
Jews and Wealth The Jews gradually grew wealthiet, and began to migrate from the Gorbals to Richer Glasgow Suburbs, such as GovanHill and Langside. However the majority of synagogues, kosher butchersm bakers/grocers and the Jewish Institute and Board of Guardians remained in the Gorbals.
