Flashcards
unit 1 computer revision
Cards in this deck (13)
- 1What is a multi-core processor ?A multi-core processor has more than one processing unit. This means multiple processes can be done simultaneously or split one between cores to improve performance
- 2What is meant by the term "clock speed"?The clock speed of a is how many fetch decode execute cycles can be performed in one second. It is measured in hertz.
- 3How does having more cores improve performance? refer to parallel processing and multitaskingMore cores mean multiple processes can be done simultaneously or split one between cores to improve performance.
- 4Why might having more cores not improve CPU performance?Although you may have double the cores it doesn't mean you have double the computers speed. CPU cores have to communicate with each other through channels and this uses up some of the extra speed.
- 5How does increasing clock speed improve CPU performance?By increasing clock speed you are increasing the number of fetch execute decode cycles in a second. This means the computer can run at a higher speed.
- 6What is cache memory and what is stored in it?Cache memory is a small high speed block of memory in the CPU. It stores the most frequently used data and instructions.
- 7How does increasing cache memory improve CPU performance?JUSTIFYIt can be accessed faster than regular main memory(RAM).This reduces the time that the CPU has to wait for data from the main memory.
- 8What is the purpose of the CPU?The purpose of the CPU is to process the data fetched from the RAM. This is carried out by using the fetch decode execute cycle.
- 9What is an "embedded system"?An embedded system are systems usually dedicated to a single task or small range of specific tasks. An example is a washing machine
- 10Give 4 examples of embedded systems.1.Calculator
2.micro waves
3.dish washers
4.washing machine - 11Why are embedded systems used instead of computer systems? They are easier to design and are cheaper to produce. Most of the time they are more efficient at there task compared to a computer system.
- 12What is the role of the control unit within the CPU?It decodes instructions. it controls the executions if the execution in the correct order. it regulates the timing of the processor using regular pulses from a system clock.
