Flashcards
networks
Cards in this deck (30)
- 1What is a computer network?A series of computers connected together
- 2Describe a LANLocal Area Network- used in a small geographical area
- 3Describe a WANWide Area Network-used in a large geographical area
- 4What are the advantages of a computer network? Its cheap
- 5What are the disadvantages of a computer network?easily hackable
- 6What devices are needed to produce a LAN?PCs/workstations and servers, NIC, Cabling and connectors, Hub, concentrator and more complicated network devices such as Bridge, LAN Switch and Router.
- 7What is the purpose of a NIC?it allows the computer to connect to a network
- 8What is the purpose of a Router?A router is a switching device for networks
- 9What is the purpose of a Hub?A hub is a common connection point for devices in a network
- 10What is the purpose of a Switch? The basic function that any switch is supposed to perform is to receive information from any source connected to it and dispatch that information to the appropriate destination only
- 11What is the purpose of a WAP?in computer networking, a wireless access point, or more generally just access point, is a networking hardware device that allows other WiFi devices to connect to a wired network.
- 12what is the purpose of a web browser?A web browser, is an application used to access and view websites
- 13What is the difference between a Hub and a Switch?A switch is used to connect various network segments. A network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers together within one local area network. A Hub connects multiple Ethernet devices together, making them act as a single segment.
- 14What is the Internet? The internet is a global network of computers that works much like the postal system, only at sub-second speeds
- 15What is the World Wide Web?An information system on the Internet which allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another.
- 16What is the purpose of an ISP?An Internet Service Provider is a company that provides Internet access to companies, families, and even mobile users
- 17What is an IP address? An IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network
- 18What is a URL?It is the address of a World Wide Web page
- 19How is a URL constructed? With the protocol, the domain name and the path
- 20Explain the role of the DNSThe main function of DNS is to translate domain names into IP Addresses, which computers can understand
- 21What are the three different network topologies?Bus, Star and Ring topology
- 22What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Star topology?advantages:
Easy to install and wire. No disruptions to the network when connecting or removing devices. Easy to detect faults and to remove parts.
disadvantages:
Requires more cable length than a linear topology.
If the hub, switch, or concentrator fails, nodes attached are disabled. - 23What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Ring topology?advantages:
All data flows in one direction, reducing the chance of packet collisions. A network server is not needed to control network connectivity between each workstation.
disadvantages:
All data being transferred over the network must pass through each workstation on the network, which can make it slower than a star topology.
The entire network will be impacted if one workstation shuts down. - 24What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Bus topology?advantages:
Easy to connect or remove devices in a network without affecting any other device. In case of any computer or device failure, there will be no effect on other devices or network.
disadvantages:
f the main cable fails or gets damaged the whole network will fail.
as more workstations are connected the performance of the network will become slower because of data collisions. - 25List examples of data that need to be kept secureInteger.
Floating-point number.
Character.
String.
Boolean. - 26What is a Pigpen Cipher? The pigpen cipher is a geometric simple substitution cipher, which exchanges letters for symbols which are fragments of a grid.
- 27What is a Caesar Cipher? It is a type of substitution cipher in which each letter in the plaintext is replaced by a letter some fixed number of positions down the alphabet
- 28What is encryption?encryption is the process of encoding a message or information in such a way that only authorized parties can access it and those who are not authorized cannot.
- 29What is decryption? The conversion of encrypted data into its original form
- 30Why encrypt data?Encryption is important because it allows you to securely protect data that you don't want anyone else to have access to.
