Family A group of people who are related by blood, marriage or adoption.
Kinship Blood relationships
Sibling A group of persons who, through marriage, blood or adoption, share both parents.
Bigamy The criminal act whereby one person remains married to two people at the same time.
Incest The usually criminal act whereby members of the same family engaged in sexual activity with each other.
Marriage The legally or formally recognized union of two people who are partners in a personal relationship.
Legal separation A couple live apart but remain married, under a court order.
Inheritance A sum of money or personal belongings passed down from a deceased person to an heir(s).
Annulment A marriage between a couple is the retroactive declaration of the marriage to be null and void. Retroactive means the marriage is considered invalid from the beginning and therefore had never taken place.
Alimony The legal obligation of a spouse to financial support another before or after a divorce or legal separation.
Divorce The legal termination of a marriage.
Patrilineal The tracing of an individual's family relations based on the ancestors, or family line, of the father. It involves the father's side of the family tree.
Matrilineal The tracing of an individual's family relations based on the ancestors, or family line, of the mother. It involves the mother's side of the family tree.
Patrifocal The couple and their children move to live with, or near to, the family of the father.
Matrifocal The couple and their children move to live with, or near to, the family of the mother.
Patriarchal The husband/father, or oldest male, is the head of the household.
Matriarchal The wife/mother, or the oldest female, is the head of the household.
Monogamy The practice or state of being married to one person at a time.
Polyandry The practice or state of a woman being married to multiple men/husbands.
Polygyny The practice or state of a man being married to multiple women/wives.
