Question Answer
high population reasons: people got married young, 12 for girls and 14 for boys. You didn't need job just little land for potatoes for food
sub division more people had to live on smaller and smaller plots of land due to higher population. the only reason people could survive on these small plots of land is because they only needed to grow enough potatoes for 10 months of the year
dependence on the potato the Irish had a huge dependence on potatoes as that was all they needed to survive on food wise was it provided the correct vitamins and minerals to live a semi healthy life
chronology of the famine 1845 ~ famine begins. one third of the potato crop was destroyed but there wasnt a shortage at first 1847 ~ black 47 - the blight hit again the failure was complete and this stuck a population already exhausting and starving. fever seeds had been sown as most of them has been eaten 1850 ~ the famine appeared to be over
soup kitchen good point ~ people got free food bad points ~ it had no nutritional value and tasted bad and if u had more than ¼ of an acre you didnt get any if you were at the back of the line you probably wouldnt get any.
work house it provided food and shelter but families were spilt up. they were often overpopulated. for example omagh workhouse was made for 800 but had 377 more people in it becuase people had no other choice but to go. However not everybody wanted to go and some just starved and died in their own home as they didnt want their family to be split up.
public works good points it provided money, it wasnt charity useful things were build through it bad points there was not enough jobs, when everybody needed it, it stopped, the hours were long and the pay was uncertain it was also paid by ur productivity and it took roughly 2 weeks to get paid
private charity several groups of people gave money to the Irish to help them get over the famine, Irishmen in the Indian army sent £50,000. a private committee in Dublin gave £63,000. Queen Victoria sent £2,000. Many landlords lost lots of money trying to help while others did nothing. Quakers sent food, clothes and seeds to the people who most needed it.
eviction reasons for evictions ~ the failure of the potatoes caused people could not pay their rent or they wouldn't pay their rent or the landlords wanted more land space. during eviction ~ wreckers tear down roof and walls of home. type of crowbar with 2 prongs to level stones then had to go to workhouse or emigrate. bigger farmers and landlords wanted rid of all the small farmers
emigration if your landlord was nice they would buy you and your family a ticket to Canada of America but otherwise they would buy you one to Liverpool. trip took 5 weeks on terrible conditions onboard the coffin ship and when you get to your destination locals didn't like them and didn't want when there
population decline in 1841 population ~ 8 million in 1851 population ~ 6 million 1 million died and 1 million emigrated in 1900 population ~ 4 1/2 million still going down
consolidation of land instead of getting bigger they grew larger. landlords were in debt after the famine so many sold land with "The Encumbered Estates act" of 1849; easier to do because you could still have money to pay of in a mortgage but you could still sell as you couldn't before, so cottiers almost died out
hatred of British
key words laissez faire ~ French - let it be they didn't want to interfere with the economy and the trade census ~ every 10 years the government collect data on each citizen for several reasons Trevelyan ~ was the most important civil servant was not sympathetic to the irish. he thought they were lazy and all he wanted to do was save money and didnt care about the people Robert peel ~ started the police in 1813, nicknamed peelers or bobbies. by 1822 each county had a police force
