Features of a Roman Catholic Church: -Altar: Focal point of Church, where transubstantiation takes place. -Stations of the cross: Representing Final days of Jesus' life in 12 pictures. -Confession box: Say sorry for Sins and be forgiven. -Font: Where babies are baptisted. -Lectern: Stand for the Bible (Respect) -Crucifix: Symbol of death and resurrection of Jesus. Roman Catholic Church: praying in a Church, as part of a congregation is an important part of Faith. It is considered beneficial to worship publicly with others each Sunday. Catholics attend Mass at least once a week.
Uses of the Church: -Weddings -Baptisms -Funerals Rules of the Church: -No talking during readings or sermons. -No smoking in or outside the Church. -No eating or drinking. -Dress appropriately. -No Mobile Phones. -No swearing or use of bad language.
External Features of a Mosque: -Dome: This is the main part of the mosque where Muslims pray to Allah. -Minaret: This is where Muslims are called to prayer (Salah). Either someone calls using a loud speaker or there is a recording. Internal Features of a Mosque: -Prayer mats: Clean space to pray. -Entrance: All Muslims remove shoes- sign of respect. -Wudu (Ablution facilities): Ritual washing-pure and clean for prayer. -Calligraphy: Fancy writing- no images or statues in a Mosque. Mihrab: Alcove in wall-direction of Makkah (Prayer). Minbar: Qur'an stand- Imam leads prayer from here. Women's gallery: Women and men sit separately. Avoid distractions.
Rules of Mosque: -Remove shoes. -Women and men sit separately. -No mobile phones/Food. -Wash (Wudu). Different uses of a Mosque: -Weddings -Funerals -Madrassah School, where young people come to learn the Qur'an. -Prayer Sessions- throughout day and particularly on Friday.
Christian Pilgrimage-Holy Lands: The Holy Land is where Jesus was born, walked on Earth. Taught and performed miracles and eventually was crucified, died and was buried. Important aspects of Holy Land: -Bethlehem-Jesus was born. -Jerusalem-Jesus performed many miracles here and taught. -River Jordan- Jesus was baptised. -Sea of Galilee- Calming of the storm miracle.
Christian Pilgrimage-Lourdes: In France, this is where Mary appeared to Bernadette in 1800's. This water here is believed to be Holy and can cure many people of illness. Many people have claimed to have been healed here. Important aspects of Lourdes: -Grotto: Shrine dedicated to Mary-people pray here. -Baths: People who are ill bathe in Holy Water and ask for miracles. -Basilica: Religious building. -Volunteer and visit the sick. -Take part in the stations of the cross.
Why go to Pilgrimage? -To be closer to God or Allah. -To be with other pilgrims. -To help those disabled and less able. -To gain spiritual guidance. -To work in a hospital. -Regain faith. -Ask for forgiveness of Sins. A pilgrimage is a religious and spiritual journey. All religions have important placed to visit that have special meanings to their religions.
Muslim Pilgrimage- Hajj: Going to pilgrimage is one of the 5 pillars of Islam and compulsory for every Muslim atleast once in their lifetime unless you are disabled, ill or cannot afford to go. Important aspects of Hajj: -Performing in Ihram which symbolises equality - all Muslims dress the same and sleep in tents. Represents all Muslims are equal in Ummah. -No Jewellery, perfume or make-up, only the essentials. No distractions away from Allah. -No shoes-sandals are allowed-difficult to complete. -Men must wear 2 pieces of white unsewn cloth-many Muslims men are buried in what they wear on Hajj. -Women must cover ear, head and neck-sign of repsect.
Christians Evangelism- Christians believe that it is their mission to help others and to spread the 'Good news' about Jesus. They do this in many ways. Jesus in the Bible sent out his 12 disciples to knock on doors and spread his message. This is the reason that Christians today think that part of the mission Jesus gave is to do this. Evangelism- Christian Example Mother Theresa was a missionary who helped spread the message to others in Calcutta as well as spread the message of Jesus. She felt her calling was to work with the less fortunate aswell as educate them about Jesus.
Christianity Conversion- -When you convert from one religion to another. Christians believe if you hear the message of Jesus through missionaries then it is your duty to accept the message and become Christian. Islam Reversion- Muslims believe in reversion. They do not believe you are converting back to Islam as they believe everyone is truly Muslim and you are finding the one true faith by becoming Muslim if you haven't been from birth.
Interfaith Dialogue- Christian viewpoint- -Unified understanding of God. -Promotes peace and justice. -Allows us to learn from others-tolerance. -'Love your neighbour.' Interfaith Dialogue- Islamic Viewpoint- -Allows to learn from others-can help avoid war and violence between religions. -This knowledge then allows to eliminate ignorance and prejudice.
Interfaith Organisation Coorymeela: -Belfast, Ireland -Eliminate hate between Protests and Catholics and bring both sides to mutual understanding of peace. -'Hill of Harmony' follows the Bibilical teaching, 'love one another as I have loved you.' Interfaith Dialogue- The Israel Interfaith Association:- -Based in Israel. -Christians, Jews and Muslims. -Cooperates with Jewish-Arab community centres, encourages more formations like that.
Religious clothings and symbols: -Sikh Turban -Niqab -Burkah -Hijab -Crucifix/Cross Why wear religious symbols? -Religious Ceremonies: Baptism-white as a sign of purity. -Compulsory part of Faith: Sikh Turban (5K's in Sikhism). -Religious Identity: So people can recognise who they are and identify. -Modesty (Hayaa): Muslim women dress in a modest way so they are respected for who they are not what they look like. -Ritual/tradition: Priests/Nuns wear certain robes part of tradition. -Equality: On Hajj all Muslims dress the same showing equality in eyes of Allah.
