Technology A use of knowledge to solve practical problems.
Three Branches of Science physical science, Earth and Space Science, and life science
Chemistry The study of composition,structure, properties, and reactions of matter.
Physics The study of matter and energy and the interactions between the two through forces and motion.
Geology The study of the origin, history, and the structure of the Earth.
Astronomy The study of the universe beyond Earth, including the Sun, moon, planets, and stars.
Biology Life science; the study of origin and the behavior of living things.
Scientific Method An organized plan for gathering, organizing, and communicating information
Observation Information that you can obtain through your five senses (sight, taste, hear, touch, smell)
Hypothesis A proposed answer to a question (an educated guess)
Manipulated Variable (Independent Variable) The variable that causes a change in another
Responding Variable (Dependent Variable) The variable that only changes in response to the manipulated variable. (Things that are measured in units.)
Scientific Theory Well-tested explanation for a set of observations or experimental results.
Scientific Law A statement that summarizes a pattern found in nature
Model Representation,of an object or event.
Scientific Notation A way of expressing a value as the product of a number between 1 and 10 and a power of 10 (Example:3.0 X 10^-4)
Length Straight-line distance between two points is the the meter (m)
SI International System of Units; metric system
Mass The quantity of matter in a object or sample, is in kilogram (kg)
Volume The amount of space taken up in an object
Density The ratio of an object's mass to its volume
Precision A gauge of how exact a measurement is
Accuracy Is the closeness of a measurement to the actual value of what is being measured
Thermometer An instrument that measures temperature; how hot an object is
Slope The steepness of a line, a ratio of a vertical change to the corresponding horizontal change. (Rise over Run)
Direct Proportion A relationship in which a ratio of two variables is constant.
Inverse Proportion A relationship in which the product of the two variables is constant.
