Flashcards
Chemistry Unit 2 Definitions
Cards in this deck (14)
- 1ClearThere are no visible particles suspended in the liquid
- 2ColouredThe liquid has a colour. A solution can be coloured and still clear. E.g. Copper Sulphate (CuSO4)
A solution can be coloured and not clear. - 3DissolvingThe process of a solid being incorporated into a liquid to for a solution.
- 4SoluteThe minor component in a solution. The component that dissolves into the solvent. The solute is usually a solid.
- 5SolventThe major component in a solution. The component that the solute dissolves into. Usually a liquid.
- 6SolutionA liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is distributed with in the major component (the solvent).
- 7SolubleAble to be dissolved
- 8InsolubleNot able to be dissolved
- 9Solubilitythe amount of solute that dissolves in a solvent to produce a saturated solution.
(solubility often expressed in g/100 cm3) - 10Saturated SolutionIf more solute is added to a solution eventually a saturated solution is formed.
If we add anymore, the solute won't dissolve, it will collect in a pile at the bottom. - 11AtomMinute building blocks.
Different types of atoms are called elements. - 12ElementAn element is made up of one type of atom.
E.g. Gold is made up of gold atoms - 13MoleculesA molecule is a structure formed when two or more atoms join together using chemical bonds.
If these are the same it is an element.
If they are different it is a compound - 14NeutralisationThe reaction between an acid and an alkali
