Flashcards
Tectonics- EQ1, Key idea 1
Cards in this deck (5)
- 1Destructive plate boundariesContinental to Oceanic: Denser oceanic subducts beneath continental, friction causes earthquakes & pressure creates volcanoes.
Continental to Continental: Same density, creates pressure builds which pile up making fold mountains. - 2Constructive plate boundariesContinental to Continental: Forced apart causing rift valley. Allows magma to rise, creating volcanoes.
- 3Conservative plate boundariesTwo parallel plates move past each other in different directions. Faults can cause pressure/ friction which can cause earthquakes.
- 4Intra-plate vs Inter-plate earthquakesOccur in the middle of plates due to pre-existing weaknesses.
Occur at plate boundaries due to different speeds, directions and movements. - 5What is a Volcanic hotspot?E.g. Ring of Fire
Occur at centre of plates.
Lithosphere w/ unusually high temp due to upwelling of molten material. As plates move a series of volcanoes can be formed such as in Hawaii.

- Description
- EQ1: Why are some locations more at risk from tectonic hazards? Key idea 1: The global distribution of tectonic hazards can be explained by plate boundary and other tectonic processes.
