What events Caused Kristallnacht? > 7th Nov. 1938 - Polish Jew, Hershel Grynszpan, goes to a German embassy in Paris, and shoots Ernst vom Rath dead, angry at the treatment of his parents by Germans > 8th Nov. - Goebbels used the incident to stir up trouble against Jews in Germany: ordering local papers to print articles condemning the attack; SA, SS, and Gestapo to attack local synagogues > 9th Nov. - vom Rath dies, causing Hitler and Goebbels to agree to turns violence against Jews into a nationwide attack
What happened During Kristallnacht? > Night of the 9th - 10th Nov. 1938 > Gangs smashed and burned Jewish property, and attacked Jews, including extreme violence, such as defenestration > Members of the SA and Hitler Youth (told not to be in uniform to make the attack seem from the public) joined in on violence > Official figures (under)estimate 814 shops, 171 homes, and 191 synagogues destroyed, with ~100 Jews killed > SS groups arrested as many Jews as the prisons could take
What was the Aftermath of Kristallnacht? > Goebbels used the "incident" to blame Jews for starting the trouble > Jews fined 1 billion marks to pay for damages > 12th Nov. - 20,000 Jews rounded up and sent to concentration camps
