Flashcards
Section 1.1
Cards in this deck (29)
- 1Define sustainability.Sustainability is about meeting the present day needs without affecting the needs of future generations. New technologies can help to manufacture products more sustainably.
- 2Describe finite resources and give examples.Finite resources are resources that don't renew themselves quickly enough to meet the needs of future generations.
e.g. coal, oil, natural gas. - 3Describe non-finite resources and give examples.Non-finite resources are resources that replenish quickly enough to meet our needs.
e.g. water, solar, geothermal, wind power and plant life such as trees - 4Define ecological footprint. The impact of a person or community on the environment: the amount of land needed to supply the natural resources they use
- 5Define social footprint. The impact a company or organisation has on people and communities.
- 6Describe disposal of waste.Landfill has been the most common method of organised waste disposal and continues to be so in many places around the world. It can cause pollution, contamination and many other problems.
- 7Define resource recovery. The process that recovers certain disposed materials for specific use. Some materials can be recycled, some composted and some even in energy generation.
- 8Define incineration.A waste treatment process that involves the burning of waste materials. It can reduce the mass of waste by up to 85 percent but it emits large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.
- 9Define enterprise. It is a skill where people take risks in order to make things happen and take initiative. It is important to look for business opportunities and gaps in the market.
- 10Describe innovation.Bringing new ideas to life by creating, designing, inventing and developing ideas into products.
- 11Describe and name the different types of crowdfunding.A method of funding a project by raising money from large numbers of people. (lots of people contributing small amounts) There are different types of crowdfunding, such as equity- where money buys shares in the business-, donations- where people give money because they believe in the cause- and debt- where money is loaned and then paid back with interest added.
- 12Describe virtual marketing and retailing.Virtual marketing is where social networks and websites are used to increase brand awareness. The retail sector is changing and adapting to virtual retailing.
- 13Define the term cooperative.A business owned, governed and self managed by its workers.
- 14Describe technology push.Where new technology or materials are developed and designers take the opportunity presented by this to design new products. Products developed as a result of technology push is that consumers didn't know they wanted a product until after it had been launched.
- 15Describe market pull. When users want a product to be improved or redeveloped to meet their needs. Market research is carried out and analysed to identify what should change / improve.
- 16Describe how fashion affects design.Fashions, trends and the challenge to keep up with the latest technology have a say in the changing nature of many products. Fashion drives colour, style and material. Fashion styles can differ in different groups of people.
- 17Describe how society impacts designs.Designers have a responsibility to design products that meet the needs of everyone in society. Different groups within society also have different needs such as those with disabilities or older people etc.
- 18Describe the environmental impacts caused when products are made.Designers need to understand the impact that products they design have on the environment. The process of converting raw materials (such as oil, metal ores and timber) into products uses a lot of energy which creates pollution and carbon dioxide, affecting the environment. Manufacturing products uses energy which is produced by burning fossil fuels. It is important to think about what will happen to the product at the end of its life.
- 19List ways to make a product environmentally friendly.-use non finite resources
-make materials separable (if there is a piece of plastic attached to something and it is not able to be removed then it won't be able to be recyclable.
-converting raw materials into products uses a lot of energy which causes pollution therefore effects the environment
-electrically powered products have increased efficiency and reduced environmental impact - 20Define computer aided design and give an example of CAD systems.Computer aided design (CAD) allows designers to draw, design and model on screen. e.g SolidWorks, Corel draw
- 21Define computer aided manufacturing and give an example of CAM systems.Computer aided manufacturing (CAM) allows CAD drawings to be made by a machine. CAM can create a faster production process and generally only uses the necessary amounts of raw materials. e.g. 3d printer and laser cutter
- 22Describe a flexible manufacturing system.A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a system where production is organised into cells of machines performing different tasks.
- 23Define the term computer numerically controlled.Machine tools that are controlled by a computer
- 24Describe just in time manufacturing.Just in time manufacturing (JIT) is a production method that means materials and components are ordered to arrive at the product assembly point just in time for production.
- 25Describe lean manufacturing.Focusing on reduction of waste when manufacturing
- 26Define the term planned obsolescence.Planning or designing a product to have a short life span so customers will buy another product from the company
- 27Define design for maintenance.Performing functions on a product that will keep it functioning correctly throughout its life.
- 28Describe automation.Automation is the use of computers to control machinery in factories with minimal human involvement.
- 29Define end of life disposal.Recycling is one of the disposal methods. It is when a material is reprocessed so it can be used again. Another method is reusing it or going to landfill. Biodegradable materials are when the material naturally breaks down quickly while non-biodegradable materials(e.g. plastic bags) can take hundreds of years to break down.
