Flashcards
SLR 1.1
Cards in this deck (21)
- 1Address Bus-Carries the memory addresses that identify where data is being read from or written to. Unidirectional
- 2Data Bus-Carries the actual data around the CPU.
Bidirectional - 3Control Bus-Carries commands and control signals to and from every component of the CPU. Bidirectional
- 4ALU- Arithmetic Logic unitPerforms arithmetic and logical operations on data
- 5Control Unit-Coordinates all activities of the CPU. Directs flow of data around the CPU and other devices.
- 6MAR-Holds the memory location of where data is to be fetched from or written to
- 7MDR-Used to temporarily store data which is read from or written to memory
- 8CIR-Holds the current instruction being decoded and executed. Contains Opcode and Operands.
- 9PCHolds the address of the next instruction to be executed.
- 10Accumulator-Stores the results of calculations from the ALU
- 11Opcode OperandWhat to do
What to do it to - 12Clock speed-Number of cycles that are performed by the CPU per second. measured in Hertz
- 13Number of coresMore cores means that the processing units can perform more instructions at the same time
- 14Cache sizeCache memory is a very fast type of memory, which is used to store the instructions and data that are used most commonly. Trade-off between cost and speed.
- 15PipeliningPipelining is a form of computer organization where instructions in a sequence are executed in turn by a sequence of modules able to operate concurrently so that another instruction can be begun before the previous one is finished.
- 16Von Neumann ArchitectureShared memory space for data and instructions
Instructions and data are stored in the same format
One instruction at a time
Single control unit follows a linear FDE cycle
Registers are used as fast access to instructions and data - 17Harvard ArchitectureInstructions and data are in separate memory units
Each has it's own bus
Reading and writing data can be done at the same time as fetching
Used by RISC processors - 18Contemporary architectureVon Neumann architecture is used when working in the main memory with data and instructions, though uses Harvard architecture to divide the cache into instruction cache and data cache.
- 19SIMD (Single instruction multiple data)Parallel processing is where a processor carries out single instructions on multiple data items at the same time
- 20MIMD (Multiple instructions multiple data)Multiple instructions are carried on multiple data items across several cores.
- 21Distributed ComputingMultiple computers on a shared network each take on a part of a bigger problem.
