Network Hardware & Physical Media

Cards in this deck (13)
- 1Network Hardware & Physical MediaSummary of Flashcards
- Routers
- Switches
- Fibre Optic
- Coaxial
- Twisted Coaxial - 2RoutersA router will accept incoming data packets arriving from a connected Local Area Network (LAN). The router will then read the destination address on each data packet and work out which of the other LAN's is the best one to use for that particular data packet.

- 3SwitchA switch is a component which is used within a computer network.. A switch has some ports and stores the addresses of all network devices that are directly or indirectly connected to it on each port.

- 4CoaxialIt is a type of signal transmission cable.

- 5Bus TopologyA bus topology is also known as a bus network. A bus topology is single line/cable with a start and end terminator. A printer and other peripheral devices can be connected on the same line.
- 6Bus topology AdvantagesEasy to install
Easy to add extra workstations
Uses less cable than a Star network
Best choice for temporary networks - 7Bus topology DisadvantagesIf there is a problem with the central cable, the entire network stops working.
If there are a lot of workstations on the network, data can travel slowly.
Data collisions can happen as the network becomes busy. - 8Bus topology Disadvantages continuedLow security - every workstation can see all of the data in the network.
Limited cable length and a maximum number of workstations - 9Ring topologyIt is also known as ring networks. A ring topology is when computers are structured in a ring/circle. All computers are connected on single cable which interlinks all computer together.
- 10Ring topology AdvantageTransmission of data is fairly simple as it only travels in one direction.
No data collisions.
Extra computers can be added easily with little effect on performance- although you have to shut down the network to be able to do this. - 11Ring topology DisadvantageIf a single machine is switched off, the network doesn't work.
If a cable breaks, the network doesn't work.
Data must pass through every computer until it reaches its destination. This can make it slower than other networks. If there are any problems with the network, they can be difficult to identify the cause. - 12Star topologyIs some computers connected to a central hub or switch. A star topology is when a group of computers are connected to a central hub or server. Each computer must have their owner separate cable to connect to the hub or server.
- 13Star topology DisadvantageYou have to buy multiple cables.
