- 1Network Hardware & Physical MediaSummary of flashcards
*Routers
*Switches
*Fibre Optic
*Coaxial
*Twisted coaxial - 2A router is a device that transfers information from one network to another in an intelligent way.It has the task of transferring data packets to their destination by the most efficient route.A switch has a number of ports and it stores the addresses of all devices that are directly or indirectly connected to it on each port.
- 3Coaxial (or “coax”) cable is a common type of cable used for transmitting data over long distances. It can carry either an analog or digital signal.Fiber optic cable is a high-speed data transmission medium. It contains tiny glass or plastic filaments that carry light beams. Digital data is transmitted through the cable via rapid pulses of light. The receiving end of a fiber optic transmission translates the light pulses into binary values, which can be read by a computer.
- 4Bus TopologyA bus topology is a single line/cable with a start and end terminator. A printer and other peripheral can be connected on the same line.
- 5Bus Topology Advantages & DisadvantagesAdvantages
*Easy to install
*Easy to add extra workstations
*Use less cable than a star network
*Best choice for temporary networks - 6Disadvantages *If there is a problem with the central cable, the entire network stops working. *If there are a lot of workstations on the network, data can travel slowly. *Data collisions can happen as the network becomes busy. *Low security -every workstation can see all of the data in the network. *Limited cable length and a maximum number of workstations.Ring Topology
- 7A ring topology is when computers are structured in a ring/circle. All computers are connected on a single cable which interlinks all computers together.Star Topology
- 8A star topology is when a group of computers are connected to a central hub or server. Each computer must have their own separate cable to connect to the hub or server.IPv4
*Made up with 32 bits
*maximum number of addresses is 4 billion
*US has used all IPV4 - 9IPv6 *Made up with 128 bits *Maximum number of addresses 1 octrillion *Was made to replace IPv4
