Flashcards
Interrupts
Cards in this deck (10)
- 1When are interrupts used?Interrupts are used when a part of the computer system needs to get the attention of the CPU or operating system.
- 2What would happen without interrupts?a computer would continue to finish all the instructions for a given program and then check to see whether there are any interruptions.
- 3Where are interrupts stored?stored in a priority queue called the interrupt queue
- 4what happens after an interrupt occurs?it is handled while whatever operation is currently running is suspended. When the interrupt has been serviced, the operation is resumed.
- 5how does an interrupt get solved?by copying the content of the registers out of the CPU.
When the suspended operation resumes, the register contents are copied back into CPU registers. - 6what is an I/O interrupt?Input/output interrupts occur when the computer is performing a data transfer operation, when the transfer has been completed or there has been an error during transmission.
- 7what is a timer interrupt?time-critical data can be seen if you stream a movie over a service such as Netflix – if the data wasn’t considered time-critical, the audio and the video would be out of sync because the video portion of the data takes considerably longer to transmit and process than the audio.
- 8what is a hardware interrupt?these interrupts mark critical errors in the hardware of the computer itself that affect the current process being performed by the CPU.
- 9what is a program interrupt?produced by the software of a computer system that tells the CPU that an error has occurred or an exception has been met.
- 10what happens when an interrupt occurs? When a particular interrupt happens, the signal sent causes the correct bit in the interrupt register to be made a 'one'.
