Flashcards

Memory and Storage

Crawford _Studying Computing GCSE English 18 cards

Cards in this deck (18)

  1. 1What are the 3 types of Storage?- Primary
    -Secondary
-Tertiary (Not covered in GCSE spec)
  2. 2What is Primary Storage?- is volatile storage with exception to ROM
(Data is removed once power is lost to computer)
    - Has a smaller capacity in terms of data than secondary
    - has faster access speeds compared with secondary
  3. 3What is Secondary storage?- is Non- Volatile (Data is not lost if computer loses power )
    - larger capacity in terms of data compared with primary
-slower access speeds compared with primary
  4. 4What is Cache? Is located in the CPU, Stores frequently used instructions that can be accessed faster than from RAM
  5. 5what IS RAM?- IS Volatile
    - Larger capacity compared to ROM
-stores currently in use programs, data in use by CPU
  6. 6What is ROM?- is Non- Volatile
    - Holds the BIOS
    - And the Bootstrap
    - Smaller capacity compared to RAM
  7. 7When is Virtual memory needed?- when there isn't enough space in RAM
    - STORES programs that are currently not in use
  8. 8What are the 3 types of secondary storage- Optical
    - magnetic
    - solid state storage
  9. 9What are the Advantages of SSD over HDD- SSD's have a faster read/ write speeds than HDD
    - SSD's dont need defragmentation
    - SSD's are more durable then HDD's due to no moving parts
  10. 10What are the Advantages of HDD's over SSD's- HDD's are cheaper in cost than SSD's
    - HDD's have a longer read/write life span than SSD's
  11. 11what are the Advantages to SSD storage?Durability, due to no moving parts
    - fast read/ write speeds
    -Doesn't need defragmenting
    - No moving parts
  12. 12What are the Advantages to Optical storage?Portability, can be easily distributed
    Cheap to produce
  13. 13What are the Disadvantages to SSD?- Costly
    - limited number of write cycles
  14. 14What are the Advantages to Magnetic Storage?Large storage capacity
    Cheaper than SSD
    Reliable if looked after properly
  15. 15What are the Disadvantages to Magnetic storage? Not Durable
Can be noisy and generate a lot of heat
Slower read/ write speeds due to moving parts
  16. 16What are the Disadvantages to Optical Storage?Small capacity
    Durability, easy to scratch
  17. 17What are the Factors to consider when comparing the choice of Secondary storage?1. Capacity
    2. Speed
    3. Portability
    4.Durability
    5.Reliability
    6.Cost
  18. 18What is the Mnemonic used to remember the different factors when evaluating the choice of secondary storage?1. Crazy
    2. Spiders
    3. Play
    4. Dodgeball
    5. Really
    6. Cheerfully
