Hardware
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1What does CPU stand for?Central processing Unit
- 2The CPU has 2 main parts what are they? The control Unit and Arithmetic logical unit
- 3What are the 3 steps for the control unit?1. It controls and monitors the hardware attached to the system
2. Controls the inputs ad outputs of data so everything goes to the right place
3. It controls the flow of data in the CPU - 4What is the Arithmetic logical unit?Carries out all the arithmetic and logical operations. For example addition, subtraction, divides and multiply
- 5What are the steps for the fetch execute cycle?Fetch, Decode and Execute
- 6What do the steps in the fetch execute cycle do?1. Fetch gets the instruction
2. Decode understands the instruction
3. Execute carries out the instruction - 7What is Cache memory?Cache is a small amount of memory which is part of the CPU, closer to the CPU than the RAM. It is used to temporally hold instructions and data that the CPU is likely to use
- 8What does Clock chip and Clock speed mean? When the computer starts up the control goes to the operating system so it can provide program or the CPU to run. The clock speed determines the speed of his cycle.
- 9What does RAM mean and what does it do?Random access memory it stores anything that is running on the computer. It is volatile because if it is not powered then it cant store anything.
- 10What does ROM mean and what does it do?Read only memory it saves uneditable programs. Its non-volatile because if it is turned off it still remembers the saved information.
- 11What is secondary storage? It's the computers long term memory, it stores the operating system, programs and files.
- 12Name 8 different types of secondary storage?Internal hard drive, portable hard drive, magnetic tape, internal solid state, USB memory stick, memory card, CD and DVD.
- 13What is an input device, name some examples?A device which inputs data into the computer, for example Touch screen, barcode scanner, microphone, keyboard, mouse etc
- 14What is an output device, give some examples?A device which outputs something from the computer system. An example Monitor, speakers, headphones, printers, projector, lights etc
- 15How can input devices be used to help disabled people?Foot operated mouse can be used if people can't use the mouse correctly. Sip and puff switches are good as all you do is place the tube in your mouth and as they blow it will select something
