Flashcards
Chapter 1&2 keywords
Cards in this deck (19)
- 1Busa set of parallel wires connecting two or more components of a computer. It typically consists of 8, 16, 32 or 64 lines.
- 2address busWhen the CPU wishes to access a particular main memory location, it sends this address to memory on the ADDRESS BUS.
- 3data busThe data in that location is then returned to the CPU on the DATA BUS.
- 4Control busControl signals are sent along the CONTROL BUS
- 5System busThe data, address and control buses connect the processor, memory and I/O controllers. These three buses are known as the SYSTEM BUS
- 6worda fixed size group of digits, typically 16, 32 or 64 bits, which is handled as a unit by the processor. Different types of processor have different word sizes
- 7accumulatorwe assume that results of all operations carried out in the ALU are stored in a single register called the ACCUMULATOR.
- 8Program counter (PC)holds the address of the next instruction to be executed
- 9current instruction register (CIR)holds the current instruction being executed, divided into operand and opcode
- 10memory address register (MAR)holds the address of the memory location from which data is to be fetched or to which data is to be written.
- 11memory data register (MDR)used to temporarily store the data read from or written to memory
- 12Opcodeused to determine the type of instruction and what hardware to use to execute it.
- 13Operandholds either:
-the address of data to be used, copied to MAR
-the actual data to be operated on, copied to MDR
-the data to be operated on may be passed to ALU or accumulator. - 14clock speedthe time it takes for the CPU to complete one clock cycle(0-1-0)
- 15system clockgenerated a series of signals, switching between 0 and 1 several million times per second
- 16coresfetches, decodes and executes instructions
- 17dual-core processorhas two processors linked together
- 18quad-core processorhas for linked processors in the same integrated circuit
- 19cache memorysuper fast memory that stores the most frequently used instructions
