Tobe Hooper was born in 1943 in Texas USA, his interest in film began at a very early age when he used his father's 8mm video camera to record home videos about his family. During the 1960s he worked as a college professor and a cameraman for a documentary film company on the side. Moreover, during the 60s he began work on his first short film "The Heisters," it was nominated to content the amateur short film category at the Oscars but was not finished in time.
Possibly Hooper's most famous film was "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" produced in 1974, he also created a sequel which was released in 1986. The first movie is widely regarded to be one of his finiest creations and has been depicted as the pinnacle of horror films. The Guardian described it as "one of the most influential films ever made."
He has been involved in numerous successful horror films, including: - The Funhouse - Poltergeist - Invaders from Mars - Night Terrors - Crocodile During his long and established career at the peak of horror film directing, Hooper developed several theories regarding what makes a successful horror film. He compiled four main categories: - Fear and society - Atmosphere - Suspense - Jump scare
FEAR AND SOCIETY: Hooper reiterates the need to use real world events to scare the audience as opposed to the conventional use of characters such as monsters, ghosts and clowns. Hooper also claims that he is against the idea of horror films containing massive amounts of violence. ATMOSPHERE: Furthermore, Hooper stresses the importance of increasing suspense and tension to conjure an apprehensive atmosphere to exploit the hidden fears of the audience
SUSPENSE: Hooper also believes in the constant use of high-angle, low-angle and point-of-view shots to create suspense, this makes the actions of supernatural antagonists JUMP SCARE: Hooper includes certain points in his films where his audience sit on the edge of their seat and literally 'jump' at the moments of fear and unease.
