Nouns | Used to name a person, place or thing. It can also work as a subject, object or compliment. |
Abstract nouns | Names an idea, event, quality or concept. E.g. freedom, love, courage. |
Concrete nouns | Objects and substances, including people and animals, which physically exist/ material things. E.g Table, dog, house. |
Collective nouns | Describes a group of things or people as a unit. E.g. family, herd, audience. |
Common nouns | The name of a group of similar things. E.g. table, book, window. |
Proper nouns | The name of a single person, place or thing. E.g. John, London. |
Verbs | Expresses an action or a state of being in relation to the subject. E.g. Runs, bites. Compound verbs are the same as the above but give a sense of time. E.g. will run, will bite. |
Modal auxiliary verbs | Closed class as opposed to open classed verbs; it is used to add functional or grammatical content to the information given by another verb. |
Direct address | The person who is being directly spoken too. |
