Data Level Protection

Brooke Clarke IT GCSE English 22 cards

Cards in this deck (22)

  1. 1What is device hardening? The process of making devices, systems and networks more secure from hackers.
  2. 2What are different ways to harden your device?Firewalls, anti-virus and encryption
    Restricting user privileges
    Removing non-essential programs
    Applying security patches (updates)
  3. 3How do firewalls work?Uses a set of rules that look at network packets to filter and reject anything that looks suspicious.
  4. 4Why are firewalls used?To protect their local area network (LAN) from the dangers posed by an external network, like the internet.
A firewall may also be used to restrict access to websites by businesses or governments.
  5. 5Are firewalls hardware, software, or both?Both
  6. 6What happens when a virus is detected by an anti-virus?When a virus is detected, it is sent to the anti-virus provider.
  7. 7What is the purpose of anti-virus software?Anti-virus software is designed to detect malware (malicious software) like viruses, worms, trojans and spyware.
  8. 8Why does anti-virus software need to be updated regularly?Viruses can morph to avoid detcetion.
  9. 9How do anti-virus companies recognise viruses? They have have a list of known viruses. This is called a database.
  10. 10What are some advantages of anti-virus software?Finds and removes files containing malicious code
    Is often free to download
  11. 11What are some disadvantages of anti-virus software?Needs to be continually updated so it can detect new viruses
Because it is constantly scanning files, it can slow down a computer or network
The most effective software can be expensive
If a virus is unknown, it won't be picked up
  12. 12What is encryption? The process of encoding data or a message so that it cannot be understood by anyone other than its intended recipient.
  13. 13The data or message is encrypted using an...?Encryption algorithm.
  14. 14What is an encryption key?A piece of information - usually random characters - used by the software algorithm to encrypt data or a message into a form which is unreadable (encryption) and allow the data or message to be made readable again (decryption).
  15. 15How does encryption work?It uses an algorithm to scramble the text
    The data then becomes unreadable
It will need a key – that both uses have to unscramble (read the data)
  16. 16What does obscuring data entry prevent?Shoulder surfing
  17. 17What is obscuring data entry? When sensitive information, like a password is entered, the characters are masked with dots or asterisks (*).
  18. 18What is auto-complete?A useful feature for recognising familiar inputs (like bank details) and entering them. But it can also pose a security risk.
  19. 19What is a disadvantage of 'stay logged in'?Can leave account vulnerable to attack
  20. 20What is an advantage of 'stay logged in'?Saves time
  21. 21What is captcha? It stops bots auto filling in the data.
  22. 22What shows that a website is safe?HTTPS / Padlock. It uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) shows the user the site is safe to put data into
