carlking377 ICT GCSE English 35 cards

Cards in this deck (35)

  1. 1What does Lan stand for?Local area Network
  2. 2what does Wan stand for?Wide area network
  3. 3what can networked computer do?they can share hardware, software and data.
  4. 4what are lans sutible for?Lans are sutible for smaller areas like small companies.
  5. 5what are wans available for?they are available over very large areas in many organisations. world wide web is a wan.
  6. 6how do lans join computers together is a different way?this is called network topologies.
  7. 7name the three network topologies?Ring topoligies, Bus topoligies, star network.
  8. 8explain what a ring topology is?Ring topology is when all netwroked computers are connected together in a circle.
  9. 9what are the positives and negatives of ring topology?Positives: its fast.
Negative: if the cable breaks it wont work.
  10. 10why is ring topology fast?becasue unlike with bus network all data travels down one cable.
  11. 11if the cable breaks why wont the ring topology work?there is only one cable so no computer will work.
  12. 12explain what a bus network is?a bus network is when you join all the computers to one big cable.
  13. 13what is the big cable called on the bus network?the big cable on the bus network is called the BACKBONE.
  14. 14what are the positves of the bus network?the positves are:they are very cheap and easy to install.
  15. 15what happens if they back bone breaks?if the backbone breaks the whole networkis unavailable.
  16. 16expalin the negatives of the bus network?the negatives of the bus network is that it isnt sutible for large lans this is becasue if too many computers are connected it will slow the network down.
  17. 17explain what is in the star network?in a star network all the computers are connected directly to onr big computer called a server using hubs or switches?
  18. 18what are the positives of the star network?the good thing of the star network is that if one cable breaks, all other cables will still work. it is fast.
  19. 19why is the star network fast?the star network is fast becasue each computer has its own line to the server.
  20. 20what is the drawback to the star network?the drawback to the star network is that is expensive to buy thye hardware like hubs and switches.
  21. 21what is the internet?the internet is a WAN made up of smaller networks
  22. 22what is extrant?extrant is an external network which can be viewed by many different people at an organisation.
  23. 23what is intranet?the intranet is the internal network which is private to one organisation.
  24. 24what are routers?routers are used to allow different home networks to communicate. they can connect the home network to the internet.
  25. 25what are switches?switches are used to connect different computers together as part of a network.
  26. 26what are gateways?these are to allow two different networks to speak to one another.
  27. 27how do gateways allow networks to speak to one another?they do this by translating data.
  28. 28what are bridges?bridges are used to join or bridge two lans together to form one larger network.
  29. 29what is packet switching?these can speed up networks.
  30. 30how can packet switching speed up networks?they can speed up networks by only sending packets of data to the computer.
  31. 31how is only sending packets of data to the computer a positive?becuase this means less data is travelling unecesserarily around the entire network.
  32. 32what is POS?POS is integrated point opf sale
  33. 33what do POS do?POS handle payments in shops.
  34. 34what are the advantages to POS?data can be shared which makes it easier to work together. computer can share harware like a printer which is cheaper than buying printers. it is quicker to update software-it is stored in one place ona server.
  35. 35what are the disadvantages to POS?virusis can be easily spread through networks.
data and software is all in one place which means all computers will not work if the network has problems.
networks require regular maintenance- this is expensive.
