Flashcards

1.1.1 Structure and function of the processor

Ben Rawlins Computer Science A level English 20 cards

Cards in this deck (20)

  1. 1Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU),Carries out calculations and logical decisions.
  2. 2Control Unit (CU),Sends signals to coordinate how the processor works. Controls the movement of data and decodes instructions.
  3. 3Program Counter (PC),Keeps track of the memory location of the executed line and points to the next instruction.
  4. 4Memory Data Register (MDR) ,stores fetched data or instructions.
  5. 5Memory Address Register (MAR),Stores the address of fetched data or instructions.
  6. 6Current Instruction Register (CIR),Stores the most recently fetched instruction.
  7. 7Accumulator (ACC),Stores results of calculations from the ALU.
  8. 8Data Bus,Carries data between the processor and memory.
  9. 9Address Bus,Carries the address of the memory location being read or written.
  10. 10Control Bus,Sends control signals from the Control Unit.
  11. 11Fetch Part,Value in the Program Counter (PC) is copied to MAR. Contents of the location are sent via the data bus to the MDR. MDR content is copied to the CIR. Program Counter (PC) is incremented.
  12. 12Decode Part,Contents of CIR are sent to the Control Unit for decoding.
  13. 13Execute Part,The instruction is executed.
  14. 14Clock Speed,Determines the speed of signals made by the processor. Increasing it enhances CPU performance.
  15. 15Number of Cores,Each core can run independently on different or similar tasks. More cores facilitate simultaneous tasks and quicker task sharing.
  16. 16Cache,Reduces the distance between the processor and stores frequently accessed data and instructions.
  17. 17Pipelining,Different CPU parts handle various stages of the Fetch-Decode-Execute cycle.
  18. 18Von Neumann Architecture,Includes 1 CU, 1 ALU, and 1 memory store for both instructions and data. Creates a bottleneck due to shared memory.
  19. 19Harvard Architecture,Utilizes separate memory stores for instructions and data. Avoids bottleneck issues.
  20. 20Contemporary Architecture,Incorporates features from Von Neumann and Harvard architectures. Introduces complex ideas like variable clock speed and power conservation.
