- 1Problem recognition,Identify what the problem is, identify the stakeholders requirements, analyse any existing solutions and their strengths and weaknesses, what features can be used from those solutions, is the problem too large to solve as one task, consider the data requirements
- 2Problem decomposition,Helps to identify any pre-exising solutions to the sub-routines, any reusable subprograms, the overall structure, the order the sub-problems are dealt with, can help divide teams up based on their strengths
- 3Divide and conquer,Repeatedly dividing the problem into two or more similar but simpler problems, which are then also divided to become simpler until the sub-problems are easy enough to solve
- 4Advantages of divide and conquer,Quick, becomes more manageable
- 5Disadvantages of divide and conquer,Generate a lot of data causing overflows, can be quite complex to code, hard to trace data flows when debugging
- 6Backtracking,Finding a solution that explores a possibilty until it is no longer deemed feasible, then you backtrack the last point it worked and try a different way
- 7Data mining,Examining large data sets to look for patterns and relationships
- 8Heuristics,Using an appoximate, non-optimal, sufficient solution, solves enough of the major element of a problem when a complete solution is impratical
- 9Performance modelling,Testing the system under maximum stress, using models when full tests arent possible because of time, money or safety, only useful if the model and data are accurate
- 10Pipelining,Where the output from one process provides the input for another, complex tasks can be split into multiple streams so processes can be completed in parallel
- 11Visualisation,Can identify key features in a complex situation, can show interesting and unexpected trends
